Willow Shoulder Bags - Weekend course in Nailsworth 1/2nd August 2026
A weekend course for creative willow lovers who wish to learn some new skills and delve into design and pattern. You will learn traditional basket making techniques including the Catalan style, alongside creatively mixing natural willow colours and playing with texture in weave. Leaving with a sense of pride in what you have made, a connection to the natural world through materials and a beautiful and useful bag to use everyday.
Process: We will start with a pre-dried oval hoop and learn the Catalan style of building a base. From there you will have the chance to practise different weave patterns to build up the sides with a choice of colours of Somerset and locally grown willow. We will finish with a rod border before fitting leather shoulder straps with brass rivets. You will be gently guided throughout the process and each willow handbag will be unique. Suitable for those with a little experience weaving with willow, or confident beginners. Complexity of weaves can be tailored to suit the individual; everyone can learn something new.

‘Tess is generous in all aspects of her teaching - with the knowledge and skills she shares, with the encouragement and patience she holds, and with the confidence and joy that she instills. I came away from her class with a beautiful basket that I am proud to use, and my heart filled with the memory of a truly nourishing couple of days. What was a surprise to me was that Tess’ teaching felt so full and yet so spacious at the same time. An absolute delight’
