One-day Willow Basketry workshop at retreat centre Nourish & Moor. Spend a relaxing day in the Dartmoor National Park immersing yourself in the ancient craft of basket making. The day will be beautifully accompanied by a colourful, vibrant lunch and all refreshments.
Starting with a round willow hoop, you will be guided through the steps to create a strong Catalan base, learning about selecting the right materials for each stage of your basket. This design allows everyone, beginner or not, to make a good size basket in one day. You will learn one or two weave patterns to build up the sides, choosing between the palette of natural barked willow colours. At the end of the day Tess will guide you to weave the stakes into a rounded rod border to finish off your basket.
A relaxing day of immersion in willow, gorgeous food and wilderness surroundings.
Taught by Willow basketry artist Tess Wakeling;
Tess began working with willow over 10 years ago. Her basketry work encompasses contemporary lighting, woven bags, sculpture and installation. She believes that through practical, tactile experiences with natural materials we can all feel better, calmer and more present. After teaching basket making to young adults with additional needs for the past 7 years, she now runs workshops for all folks whether complete beginners or those wishing to delve deeper into the craft. Teaching willow work connects her to a long line of people who have passed on this ancient skill to others, keeping a heritage craft alive for future generations.
