Willow shoulder bags

A weekend course for creative willow lovers who wish to learn some new skills and delve into design and pattern. You will learn traditional basket making techniques including the Catalan style, alongside creatively mixing natural willow colours and playing with texture in weave. Leaving with a sense of pride in what you have made, a connection to the natural world through materials and a beautiful and useful bag to use everyday.

Process: We will start with a pre-dried oval hoop and learn the Catalan style of building a base. From there you will have the chance to practise different weave patterns to build up the sides with a choice of colours of Somerset and locally grown willow. We will finish with a rod border before fitting leather shoulder straps with brass rivets. You will be gently guided throughout the process and each willow handbag will be unique. Suitable for those with a little experience weaving with willow, or confident beginners. Complexity of weaves can be tailored to suit the individual; everyone can learn something new.

Investment: £180 including all materials and tools.

Food: I will provide a vegetarian lunch on the first day. On the second day we can walk 5 minutes to eat at the lovely Ruskin Mill café with balcony views over the lake, or you are welcome to bring your own lunch to eat in the grounds. I will bring raw vegan and gluten free cakes from the delicious artisan ‘Baked by Beth’.

Location: Gig Mill, Old Bristol Road, Nailsworth, Gloucestershire GL6 0JP

Cancellations: Please let me know as far in advance as possible if you can’t make it to the course. I will provide a full refund up to 21 days before. If you have to cancel at the last minute, and I can fill the space, I will refund you in full, however if I can’t fill the space, you will be refunded 50%.
